Self-Awareness Centering and Psychosynthesis Disidentification Exercise
This is a beginning practice in the yogic, meditative and psychosynthesis art and skill of disidentification. Disidentification is the engagement of that part of ourself, usually referred to as the ‘observer; which enables us to step aside from our experience, whether it is physical, emotional, or mental and to observe it in a detached and uninvolved manner. The development of this skill enables us to broaden our perceptual lens and see things from a new perspective allowing us greater options and choices for how we want to be with our experiences, relationships and life goals .
You may want to tape record these steps first or have a partner read them to you.
Take your time with each step.
- The first step is to check in with yourself to find out if you are willing to do the exercise. This is an immportant first step to bring to any inner work exercise so that your participation is done in agrement with your own sense of inner authority. Ask yourself: Is this exercise something I am interested in exploring and willing to do? If the answer is yes, then
- Begin in a stable and comfortable seated position. When you feel settled and ready take in a deep breath through your nose, open your mouth on the exhale and let it come out with a sigh.
- Become aware of the environment that you are in:
- Notice sounds.
- Become aware of the temperature of the air and notice if it feels cool or warm against, your hands, your face.
- Become aware of the sensation of your hands in contact with your body... and the sensation of contact between your body and whatever it is your are sitting on or in contact with.

- Breath: Notice that your body is breathing...Bring your attention to your natural breath and notice how it is showing up. What qualities are present? Observe the relationship between each inhale and exhale and exhale and your body. Notice the sensation of breathing.
- Body: When you are ready expand your awareness to notice other physical sensations in other part(s) of your body. What words describe these sensations? What images are present with these sensations? What stories seem to want to emerge.
- Emotions: When you are ready expand your awareness to notice any feelings (emotions) or felt sense that may be present. What words describe these emotions? What images are present with these emotions? What stories?
- Thoughts: When you are ready expand your awareness to notice your thoughts. What thoughts are on your mind? What images are present with these emotions? What stories? What words describe the thoughts that are there?
- Daily life: When you are ready expand your awareness to notice what is happening in your daily life. What shows up when you look there? What images are present with these emotions? What stories? What words describe what shows up in your daily life?
- Spirit: When you are ready expand your awareness to notice what is happening in your spirit - what sense of purpose or meaning shows up? What images? Words? Stories?
Take in a deep breath through your nose, open your mouth on the exhale and let it come out with a sigh.

- Now, mentally review everything you have noticed and ask yourself what stands out for you? From all that has emerged what seems to speak to you the most? What have you learned? Consider now how you might want to be with this. You might want to write some things down in a notebook.
- When you are ready, take a moment to acknowledge yourself and your practice - perhaps expressing gratitude for all the parts of yourself that willingly participated in helping you grow in awareness.
